Tips for Succeeding with Online Courses
Speak up if there are problems.
Students have to remember that the professor cannot see them, so they
must be absolutely explicit with their comments and requests. If students
are having technical difficulties, or problems understanding something
about the course, they MUST speak up otherwise there is no way that
anyone will know that something is wrong. Chances are, several people
have the same question.
Don't give up.
Successful students have strong motivation and commitment. They do not
give up easily when faced with difficult and challenging materials.
Students must be able to prioritize their workload so that the online
course has equal weight with other courses in school, as well as other
enrichment activities after school. Students must be committed to a
workload of 8-12 hours a week to stay on course and meet the weekly
milestones. Time management skills will be critical in an online class.
The same freedom and flexibility that makes online courses so appealing
is the same freedom and flexibility that can be the downfall of a procrastinator.
Be patient.
As much as the instructor will try to be prompt in answering questions,
students should not expect instantaneous responses to their queries.
Students must learn how to set break points in their study, so that
they can return exactly to the point when their question is answered.
Students should learn to be patient with themselves as well and giving
the material a chance to soak in.
