Tips for Succeeding with Online Courses
Use anonymity to an advantage.
One of the biggest advantages of the online format is that students
can pursue their studies without the judgments typical in a traditional
classroom. Unless the course employs video conferencing, no one can
see the students—there are no stereotypes, and class members
don't have to be affected by raised eyebrows, rolled eyeballs,
other students stealing their thunder, or people making other non-verbal
reactions to their contributions. Students don't have to feel
intimidated or upstaged by peers who can speak faster because they can
take all of the time they need to think through ideas and compose a
response before posting comments to the class.
Think before pushing the Send button.
Reading over comments before submitting them is a good way for students
to consider how readers might interpret their words. Being polite and
respectful is not only common sense, it is absolutely obligatory for
a productive and supportive online environment. Students can ask for
feedback if they're not sure how their ideas and comments will
be taken. If they disagree with what someone has said, they should utilize
all their best communication skills as they express that disagreement.
In a positive online environment, students will feel valued by the instructor
and valued by their classmates.
It is important to remember that the class can't see a grin accompanying
a sarcastic comment, can't see the concern behind a couple of words,
and can't read another student's mind or fill in the gaps if she
abbreviates her comments. Students can help the class "see"
by explaining ideas fully and using emoticons ;).
