Rubrics. Performance tasks. Portfolios. Exhibitions. The area of performance assessment is steeped in a language all its own. Let us help you and your colleagues bring the vocabulary of performance assessment to life with images of teachers designing and using performance assessment to raise students' confidence, skills, abilities, and outcomes.
We'll begin with a teacher who invited her students to co-create the rubric she, and they, would use to assess their performance tasks throughout the semester. She'll share her personal journey and the shifts in thinking taking place as she moves from traditional forms of assessment to performance-based assessment.
Then we'll explore a science classroom where a teacher knows that when we adjust our teaching practice to include project-based learning, it's just good sense to use performance assessment to gauge the multifaceted work students are doing. She'll talk about how the performance tasks she designs mirror the complex, real-life challenges and roles that help her students rehearse and prepare for adult and professional life.
Once we've seen rubric creation and performance tasks in action, we take a look at how one small conversion school is figuring out what it takes to design and implement a school-wide performance assessment system, tackling tough questions like, "How do we scaffold students' learning as they move from performance tasks to culminating senior projects?" And we'll peek in on the pinnacle of their hard work as seniors explain what the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in an authentic context has afforded them.
