The following resources and publications are published by the Small Schools Project. Copies can be downloaded for free from our site.

Research and Documentation

Through a variety of reports and resource tools, we share what we are seeing and learning about the redesign work of Washington high schools and school districts that received reinvention grants from the Gates Foundation.

Newsletters

This newsletter, for selected school board members in Washington State, shared research and stories about high school redesign. It was published Feb. 2002 - Jan. 2006. A quarterly newsletter for high schools and districts engaged in redesign work.

Classroom Resources

This series explores the structure and design elements of successful small schools, with each paper focusing on a specific content area. A series of collections of promising curricular resources and pedagogical practices that promote powerful teaching and learning in small high schools. These resources will help high schools move their focus from designing small schools to re-thinking teaching and learning practices. Picturing the Possibilities embarks on a mission to bring images that embody what we hope will become common rather than rare instances of powerful teaching and learning. There are no perfect examples; there is no fail-safe recipe; there are only possibilities—opportunities to expand your thinking about what can work in your school and in your classroom. It includes support materials to guide practitioners through the steps that will broaden and transform their understanding of the practice into action.

Other

During our work with Washington high schools converting from large schools to multiple small schools within the same building, several challenges have emerged as being common to most settings. Four of these challenges are the subject of a Small Schools Project poster series—Design Choices, Staging Conversions, A Schedule Sampler, and Powerful Learning. This compilation from five years of SSP publications includes news stories, editorials, reflections, and research summaries, providing snapshots of work well begun and lessons learned.
The publication as a whole is a 6.3Mb PDF file, which is relatively large. You can download the four sections individually to make download times more manageable:
